Being the oldest engineering higher school in the Asian part of Russia, Tomsk Polytechnic University has produced generations of graduates who have gone on to become leaders in all areas of society and industry. Today TPU is a National Research University which places special emphasis on advanced engineering education, creation of resource-efficient technologies, internationalization and integration of research and academic activities.

RESEARCH

Our core competencies lie in the area of engineering and applied sciences. We are a research university with a strong tradition of excellence in the areas of physics, applied engineering, and electronics. Recently, we added nanotechnologies and alternative energy to our research portfolio. Tomsk Polytechnic’s annual research budget of $30 million ranks second among technical and engineering schools in the country. Roughly ten percent of funding comes from outside Russia; we rank second to none in this category. Our research is strongly supported by investment in infrastructure: our daily budget on equipment purchases tops $20,000. We are the only academic institution beyond the Urals operating a nuclear reactor on campus for educational purposes. Our nuclear facility has been operational since 1967, and it played a major role in our research effort.

STUDENTS

Our school offers a wide variety degrees and programs, and we have about 14,000 students enrolled. However, our strengths in teaching go well beyond numbers. We maintain a placement system which connects graduates with prospective employers. In 2015, our career fair played host to 105 employers, and 7,000 of our students participated in internship programs. As a result, 95 percent of our graduates had job offers at graduation. Finally, we've developed an excellent ecosystem that allows new talent to flourish within innovative research programs and collaborations - we rank second in number of student publications in Russia.

INTERNATIONAL ACTIVITIES

Our programs thrive through collaboration with other academic institutions and industry. We are part of Conceiving - Designing - Implementing - Operating (CDIO) framework, originally spawned by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and the Conference of European Schools for Advanced Engineering Education and Research (CESAER). We are also associate member at Consortium Linking Universities of Science and Technology for Education and Research (CLUSTER), which serves as an umbrella for twelve European universities focusing on science and engineering.

We offer a number of dual degree programs through partnership agreements with schools in Germany, France, the United Kingdom, Czech Republic and Kazakhstan. Well over 3,000 international students are enrolled in our programs, making Tomsk Polytechnic a truly multicultural institution. A number of multi-nationals - Microsoft, Danfoss, Lapp Group, SolidWorks - operate research units on our campus.
